Career summary

Daiki Tajima has spent nearly a decade as the answer to a specific question: who takes the ball when Orix needs six competent innings from the left side? A first-round pick in 2017 after the classic finishing school of Japanese corporate baseball — JR East — he became a rotation regular in Osaka through command, a compact delivery, and a total indifference to drama.

He turned 30 this summer and has spoken this year with striking candor about wanting nothing more than to pitch as long as possible — a mellower register than the MLB ambitions once attached to his name. His 2026 has not been quiet or steady. As of September 4, Tajima is 2-5 with a 6.36 ERA over 58 innings in 14 appearances, allowing 12 home runs while striking out 42. A scoreless six-inning first win in late May showed the familiar version of the left-hander; sustaining it has been the problem. Overseas evaluators keep him on the periphery of their lists: left-handedness and durability never go out of fashion, and Japanese lefties with his profile have found second acts abroad before. Whether he wants that act is now the more interesting question.
