Career summary

Hiroto Takahashi throws the kind of fastball that makes radar guns feel understated — 158 kilometers per hour from a frame still filling out — and pairs it with a splitter that falls off the table so steeply it seems less thrown than dropped. He is 24 years old. This is the fact that follows every other fact about him, the way a signature follows a letter.

Drafted first round by the Chunichi Dragons out of Chukyodai Chukyo, the storied Nagoya baseball academy, he pitched for the WBC champions of 2023 while barely old enough to rent a car in the country he beat in the final. His gifts have never been the question: the strikeouts arrive at nearly ten per nine innings, and home runs against him remain about as common as eclipses — two allowed all season. The question, in this of all years, has been everything else.

Because 2026 was supposed to be the audition, and it has played instead like a trial. Through late July his record stands at 2-6 with an ERA near four, the walks up, the run support absent, eleven starts where there should have been twenty. At his 2025 contract negotiations he made his major-league ambition explicit, and with the under-25 international signing restrictions falling away after this season, the posting window he has worked toward all his life is finally open. Whether he steps through it this winter, or waits for a season that matches his talent, is now the most interesting question in Nagoya. Scouts, for their part, have not moved. Arms like this do not become less interesting because of one difficult summer — they become cheaper, and everyone knows it.
