Career summary

Kona Takahashi already knows what an MLB offer looks like. Last winter he was posted by the Seibu Lions and received three of them — then turned them all down, re-signing in Tokorozawa with an opt-out clause and walking back into the Japanese spring like a man who had gone to the door, looked at the weather, and decided to choose his own hour of departure.

The decision made a certain sense only he could fully audit. At 190 centimeters and 105 kilograms, he is built on an American scale, and his peak seasons of 2022 and 2023 had scouts projecting a mid-rotation future. But 2024 collapsed into the strangest line in recent Japanese baseball — zero wins, eleven losses, a shoulder that would not cooperate — and the offers that followed his 2025 recovery (eight wins, a reclaimed rotation spot) priced in the doubt. Takahashi bet on himself instead.

The bet is paying. As of September 4, Takahashi is 9-6 with a 2.69 ERA, 104 strikeouts and three complete games over 127 1/3 innings. It is the sustained body of work his market lacked a year ago. On May 10 the Lions formally announced that he had reached nine years of service time, vesting his overseas free agency rights in full. The distinction matters: this winter he can cross the Pacific with no posting fee attached and no club's permission required. Last year Seibu held the door; now the door has no lock. The boy who won the summer Koshien for Maebashi Ikuei has been public about the dream since he was a teenager. This time, leaving is simply a matter of deciding to.
